What Affects Furnace Replacement Cost?

Furnace prices vary as much as the houses they heat. These are the factors that decide what your replacement will involve.

Jordan Heating & Air Conditioning · Updated October 2026

A furnace replacement can be a straightforward swap or a bigger project, depending on the furnace you choose and the house it goes into. Here is what moves the cost, and what a good quote should spell out.

What affects the cost of furnace replacement?

Furnace type and efficiency. Standard-efficiency and high-efficiency furnaces are built differently. High-efficiency condensing furnaces produce water and use plastic vent piping, so switching from an older furnace can change the venting and add a condensate drain.

Size. The furnace should be matched to the heating needs of the house and to the ductwork, not simply to the size of the old unit.

Location. A furnace in a garage or closet is easier to reach than one in a tight attic or crawlspace, and labor follows access.

Venting, gas and electrical. The vent, gas connection and electrical connection have to meet current requirements for the new equipment. Sometimes that is simple, sometimes it means new parts.

Ductwork. Supply and return connections are sealed at the new furnace. If the existing ducts are leaky, crushed or undersized, that work is part of the conversation.

Cooling at the same time. If you want air conditioning now or later, a matched coil can be planned in. Some owners compare a heat pump instead, which replaces the furnace and adds cooling in one system.

What to look for in a written furnace replacement estimate

  • Removal and disposal of the old furnace
  • The new furnace matched to the home and the existing or updated ductwork
  • Gas, venting and electrical connections made to current requirements
  • Supply and return connections sealed at the furnace
  • Condensate drain for a high-efficiency furnace
  • Thermostat connected, or upgraded where needed
  • Start-up and a full operating check

Also check that the estimate names the equipment brand and model numbers, states the warranty terms in writing and notes anything that is not included.

Should I repair or replace my furnace?

We diagnose the problem first. If a repair makes sense, we will tell you. Replacement is worth comparing when the furnace is older and repairs are adding up, when rooms stay cold even with the furnace running, when heating bills keep rising without a change in how you use the house, or when your air conditioner is aging too and one system could replace both.

How to request a project-specific quote

Call (650) 650-2653 or send a request with a few details, and we will get back to you within one business day. It helps to share:

  • The age of your furnace and where it is located, if you know
  • Rooms that stay cold, or problems you have noticed
  • Whether you are also thinking about air conditioning or a heat pump

Jordan then looks at the furnace, the venting, the ducts and the space it sits in, sizes the rooms and runs a load calculation. You get a properly engineered written quote with the system, the scope and the price for each option, including repair when it still makes sense. You deal with the owner, not a salesperson.
