Signs it’s time for AC unit replacement
A repair is often the right call. These are the signs that replacement is worth comparing.
- Repairs are becoming routine. The same system keeps needing service, and each visit fixes one problem only for another to appear.
- It can’t keep up on hot days. The AC is not blowing cold air, the system runs constantly, or some rooms never get comfortable.
- Energy bills are climbing without any change in how you use your home.
- It uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 is no longer produced in the U.S., which makes recharging older systems difficult and expensive.
- It’s loud, short-cycles or struggles with humidity — signs the system may be failing or poorly matched to the home.
- You’re already replacing the furnace or planning a remodel — a good moment to look at the whole system, including a heat pump.
What’s included in an installation
Every project is scoped to the home. A complete air conditioner replacement typically covers:
- Removal and disposal of the old outdoor unit and indoor coil
- New outdoor unit with a matched indoor coil or air handler
- Refrigerant line set connected, pressure-tested and leak-checked — or replaced where needed
- Electrical connections and disconnect brought up to current requirements
- Condensate drain connected so moisture leaves the system properly
- Thermostat connected, or upgraded if the new system needs it
- System start-up and operating check before the job is finished
Your written estimate lists exactly what your project includes.

AC installation and repair questions
How much does AC replacement cost?
It depends on the system type and size, its efficiency, whether ductwork or electrical changes are needed, and how easy the equipment locations are to reach. We look at your home first, then give you written options with clear pricing for each.
How long does AC installation take?
A like-for-like replacement is usually much quicker than a project that adds ductwork, moves equipment or upgrades the electrical service. We’ll walk you through expected timing as part of your written options.
What size air conditioner do I need?
Square footage alone isn’t enough. Insulation, windows, sun exposure, layout and the condition of the ductwork all affect sizing. A system that’s too large or too small won’t keep the house comfortable, so we assess the home on site.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
Age, how often it needs repairs, the refrigerant it uses and how well it keeps you comfortable all matter. When an AC repair makes sense, we’ll tell you.
Should I consider a heat pump instead?
A heat pump cools in summer and heats in winter, so it’s worth comparing if you’re also replacing a furnace or moving away from gas heat.
Which brands do you install? Is there a warranty?
We service and install all major brands. 10-year parts warranty and up to 10-year labor warranty on the majority of equipment we install.
